A majority of Americans today agree that the federal government is out of control and increasingly represents special interests rather than the citizens. A majority of Americans agree that we are losing our Founding Principles at an increasing rate. At some point, American citizens are going to start asking the question:
"Why?"
The federal government is out of control because the system of checks and balances established by our Founding Fathers was eliminated. The balances - the three branches of the federal government was intended to keep one branch from totally dominating the other two. More or less this is still in place and works to some extent.
But the checks on the federal government were eliminated at Appomattox, destroyed the war that Lincoln forced upon the country. Our Founding Fathers considered the States to be the check on the federal government, to force it to abide by the Constitution. But the ability of the States to restrain or be a check on the federal government was the loser in the War of Southern Independence.
